Michael Barrow & The Tourists

'Over it'? We’re definitely not, at least not at first where it all begins with that familiar feeling of frustration of being stuck while everything around you moves forward, like getting caught in a loop of mistakes and missed opportunities, making you feel lost as life seems to move past you.

Taking a deeper look, this track dips headfirst into this beautiful Utah indie sound, opening with a burst of powerful instrumental that gives out a high, upbeat energy. Keeping things traditional, the song pretty much features a straightforward structure and a simple chord progression. But on top of these things, there are all these incredible individual performances, bringing together their talents, and translating those deep thoughts through some wonderful melodies.

Speaking of this band, the lineup has Mac Wright as lead guitarist, Zach Collier as keyboardist, Alessandro Improta as bassist, Reed Perkins as drummer, and Michael Barrow as lead vocalist and guitarist, all in sync with their versatility. Here, in this song, they switch between different patterns and tones through their instruments to keep that sweet balance between intense and calming traits. You can hear how rock, folk, and electronic elements come together, creating a sound that has been a core part of their identity from the beginning.

Understanding instrumental even further, there are clean and distorted electric guitars, playing some nice, melodic open strings, palm mutes and some fillers all around the song, with even an acoustic one lightly making it into the mix, particularly in the verses. Then there are some atmospheric, dreamy synth keys, playing the main riff while filling the space with a mix of calm as well as some vibrant tones. With them, you have a nice, warm and saturated bass, covering the low end with tight, snappy drums with shimmering, crashing cymbals.

Then there’s Michael’s humble, bright and natural voice; with an rustic tone. His vocals are layered with background harmonies, moving smoothly through the range, showing off some delicate vibrato, a bit of rasp, and even a touch of falsetto towards the end. His delivery really nails the feeling of the song, making those emotions hit harder.

Apart from all the music and performances, the meaning behind this song is deep, as said before, it digs into bitterness that comes from being stuck in the same routines, and questions whether to continue pretending everything's fine or make the effort to break free and change things. There's that feeling of dealing with a messed-up system, wanting more from life but feeling totally trapped and losing one true self most of the time.

But by the end, 'Over It' has its hopeful moment, a moment of realisation that maybe a fresh start is on the horizon. Maybe, things are not out of the loop just yet and there’s a hint that things could change with a will to try something new.
